Navigating the phone screen
Prepare a clear introduction, specific interest, availability, and salary expectations for a focused initial recruiter conversation.

Suggested practice time: 20 minutes, separate from reading.
A short phone screen can determine whether you reach the main interview. Recruiters generally check background, interest, timing, and basic conditions rather than deep specialist knowledge. Manage the call with preparation, clarity, and energy.
What you will learn
- Understand screening's purpose.
- Prepare its four main criteria.
- Deliver a 60-second introduction and reason for interest.
- Discuss availability and salary calmly.
- Communicate clearly through voice.
1. A short call with significant consequences
In 15–30 minutes, a recruiter may decide whether to move you forward. Your tasks are to explain relevance quickly, show specific interest, and clarify practical matters such as start date, salary, and availability.
Weak:
"I don't really know the role's details, but I applied and am interested."
Better:
"For two years I have worked in customer support and response-process improvement. The combination of user communication and process optimization interests me because it matches the focus of my previous work."
2. Four recruiter checks
- Background: Are your skills or experience relevant?
- Interest: Why this company and role?
- Timing: When can you start, and does it fit the process?
- Salary: Are expectations reasonably close to the budget?
Prepare brief answers.
Background example:
"My main experience is user-behavior analysis and reporting. My recent project also involved close product collaboration, making product analysis a natural next step."
Interest example:
"Your product simplifies a recurring, real problem. I want to work where the effect on users is visible."
3. Three short preparation cards
Use a few lines of notes, not a script.
Card 1: 60-second introduction
- Current role or background
- Main experience
- Relevance to the role
"I am [role/background], with experience in [two relevant areas]. Most recently I [related result or project]. This role interests me because [specific connection]."
Card 2: Why this company?
Avoid generic prestige claims. Possible specific reasons:
- Product focus on simplifying users' processes
- A role combining analysis and cross-team work
- The growth stage and opportunity to improve processes
Card 3: Salary range
Prepare a researched, flexible range. If the discussion is premature, first clarify role level and company budget.
4. Design your phone delivery
Without visible expression or posture, voice carries more of the communication:
- Choose a quiet place.
- Stand if helpful.
- A brief smile may warm delivery.
- Speak slightly slower and more clearly than casual conversation.
- Finish sentences audibly and completely.
Prefer:
"That is why I believe my experience aligns with this role."
Over a trailing:
"So I guess maybe I could be suitable..."
5. Aim for a clear next step
For an unexpected call, you need not interview immediately in an unsuitable setting:
"Thank you for calling. Could we speak at ... today so I can give the conversation my full attention?"
Confirm the person's name, company, and role. Verify identity through an official company channel if unsure. Ordinary screening does not require one-time passwords, bank information, or sensitive documents. Budget and essential conditions support mutual fit at this stage; detailed negotiation can follow clearer role scope.
You do not have to prove everything during screening. Build an initial picture that is clear, credible, and aligned.
Close with interest, readiness for the next stage, thanks, and a process question:
"Thank you for the explanation. I am more interested after hearing about the connection to my experience in [area]. I would welcome the next stage. What normally happens next?"
